How we judge it

The verdict is based on a seismological rule of thumb for how far away a quake of a given magnitude can typically be felt: an M3 is rarely felt more than ~30 km away, while an M5 can be felt hundreds of kilometres away. We compare your distance to each quake with its magnitude and give an honest estimate — but it is an estimate: ground conditions, the building and the floor you are on matter a lot. If no quake fits

Then it was probably something else: heavy traffic, a washing machine spinning, wind gusts in a tall building — or a blast nearby. Quakes that can be felt are almost always registered within 20 minutes, so check again a little later if in doubt. See also earthquakes today.
