Can earthquakes be predicted?

It is the most-asked question in seismology: can an earthquake be predicted before it happens? The honest answer is no — not precisely. But that does not mean we are without tools.

The short answer: no

A real prediction would have to state three things in advance: when, where and how strong. No recognised method anywhere in the world can do that for a specific earthquake. Claims to the contrary do not survive scientific scrutiny.

Why is it so hard?

Earthquakes begin deep down, where we cannot measure directly, and faults behave chaotically: a small adjustment may stop at once or grow into a catastrophic rupture. There is no reliable "precursor". Radon emissions, strange animal behaviour, foreshocks and earthquake lights sometimes appear before big quakes — but just as often nothing follows, and large quakes frequently strike with no warning at all. None of it can be used to raise an alarm.

What science can actually do

Instead of prediction, seismologists work with probabilities. From past quakes, the motion of faults and GPS measurements of where stress is building, they draw hazard maps: "This region has roughly an X percent chance of a strong quake in the next 30 years." That is not a date — but it is enough to build smarter, write building codes and prioritise preparedness. After a big quake, the course of the aftershocks can also be estimated fairly well.

Early warning: seconds, not days

Some systems feel like prediction but are not: early warning. When a rupture starts, the shaking spreads at a known speed. Sensors near the epicentre catch the first, faint waves and send an alert electronically — faster than the shaking itself travels. Cities in Japan and Mexico, among others, get seconds to a minute of warning this way: enough to stop trains, shut gas lines and move people away from danger. It is not a prediction of the future — it is a race against the waves, after the quake has already begun.

Precisely because we cannot predict the individual quake, preparation is everything. If you live in an earthquake zone, know the basic safety rules — they work whenever the quake comes.
