Earthquakes in Austria

Austria's earthquakes are a product of the ongoing collision between the African and Eurasian plates that raised the Alps. Activity concentrates along fault systems such as the Mur-Mürz valley, the Vienna Basin and the Inn valley in Tyrol, giving the country low to moderate seismic hazard.

Most events are small, but earthquakes around magnitude 5 do occur — the Seebenstein quake of 1972 and the Ebreichsdorf swarms near Vienna are examples that were felt widely. Serious structural damage is uncommon, though older buildings can suffer in the stronger events.

The figures below are drawn live from the EarthquakeIndex archive for the area shown. No one can predict when the next earthquake will strike — but you can follow every event the moment EMSC records it.
