Earthquakes in Peru

Peru lies along one of the great subduction zones of the world, where the Nazca plate plunges beneath South America off its Pacific coast. This collision built the Andes and drives frequent, powerful earthquakes beneath the coastal cities of Lima, Arequipa and Trujillo.

The 1970 Ancash earthquake (M7.9) remains one of the deadliest in the hemisphere: its shaking triggered a rock-and-ice avalanche that buried the town of Yungay. The 2007 Pisco quake (M8.0) and the great 1868 Arica event are further reminders that magnitude-8 earthquakes are a recurring part of Peruvian life.

The figures below are drawn live from the EarthquakeIndex archive for the area shown. No one can predict when the next earthquake will strike — but you can follow every event the moment EMSC records it.
