Earthquakes in Germany

Germany is a country of low to moderate seismicity. Most of its earthquakes cluster in a few zones: the Lower Rhine Embayment around Cologne and Aachen, the Upper Rhine Graben near the French border, the Swabian Alb in the south, and the Vogtland on the Czech border, where earthquake "swarms" of many small tremors are common.

Damaging events are rare but real: the 1978 Albstadt earthquake (M5.7) is among the strongest in recent memory, and the great 1356 Basel earthquake just across the border remains a benchmark for regional hazard. Most German quakes, though, are small and felt only locally.

The figures below are drawn live from the EarthquakeIndex archive for the area shown. No one can predict when the next earthquake will strike — but you can follow every event the moment EMSC records it.
