Earthquakes in Spain

Spain's earthquakes are driven by the slow northward push of the African plate against Eurasia. The greatest activity is in the south and southeast — the Betic Cordillera and the Alboran Sea between Spain and Morocco — while the Pyrenees and the Atlantic margin off the southwest add further seismicity. Overall the hazard is low to moderate by global standards.

History holds sharp reminders nonetheless: the 1884 Andalusia earthquake killed some 800 people, and the shallow 2011 Lorca quake (M5.1) caused deaths and heavy damage despite its modest magnitude. The great 1755 Lisbon earthquake was felt strongly across the southwest.

The figures below are drawn live from the EarthquakeIndex archive for the area shown. No one can predict when the next earthquake will strike — but you can follow every event the moment EMSC records it.
