Earthquakes in Philippines

The Philippines lies in the heart of the Pacific Ring of Fire, boxed in by subduction trenches on almost every side — the Manila, Philippine and Cotabato trenches among them — while the great Philippine Fault slices through the archipelago from north to south. Few countries face such intense seismic activity.

The 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake (M7.9) generated a tsunami that killed thousands, and the 1990 Luzon earthquake (M7.7) ruptured more than 100 km of the Philippine Fault, devastating Baguio. Damaging quakes strike the islands somewhere almost every year.

The figures below are drawn live from the EarthquakeIndex archive for the area shown. No one can predict when the next earthquake will strike — but you can follow every event the moment EMSC records it.
